The unstable expansion of a trinucleotide repeat
(CGG) is located in the 5'-untranslated region
of the FMR1 gene. Recent findings indicate
that an increase beyond 200 repeats impedes
the migration of the 40S ribosomal subunit.
This causes translational suppression.
